Pining for Pumpkins

10/8/2013

decorate for fall
Afflicted? Obsessed?
Maybe. But my more than usual lust for all things pumpkin this fall is a little odd. Maybe its cause between the soppy wet summer and squash borer pumpkin killing monsters, all bets were off.
The odds of harvesting the fruits of the pumpkin vine labor was looking dim. And yet the plants somehow managed to pull off what they view as: "we must endure...we must survive!" I think they learned to swim.
Somehow I slopped in the field and hauled several pumpkins and winter squash out of the garden. Sadly, this happened 2 months too early in late JULY! Once again the random internet info saved the day. They cured in the sun before being stored in the basement till now when nobody but me (and you) know they weren't just picked from the local Lowe's garden center. That's right! I grew the majority of that fall display pictured above. All it needs now is that creepy motion sensor witch to stand over it.

Or there is always this...

This is the goal for next year.

Kelley Creek Farms is a small (micro really) hobby farm located in Central Alabama 30 minutes south of Birmingham. We raise heritage and rare waterfowl and poultry along with a myriad of other creatures that give the farm its life. In addition to the birds, we raise heirloom tomatoes and vegetables.

Each day is different and brings a new set of adventures. Some make you laugh and some make you cry. Some are just plain frustrating. But we persevere knowing that tomorrow's set of problems will be completely different than today. Still figuring all this out ....one day at a time and striving for a more sustainable way of life.
