Sumor

6/21/2013

Today is the first day of summer. If you live in the south and say you like summer, it means you:
a. have a pool
or
b. spend all your free time at a condo at the beach,
(most likely indoors during the hottest parts of the day)
Summer is not kind here.

Summer is not kind here.

People who work outside for a living change their hours and work 6-2 or 7-3. It's that hot. And then there's our water bill which edges towards the level of the national debt (minus 170 zero's). The grass turns brown, and every living thing goes to sleep in whatever shade it can find till dusk which this time of year can take a while.

I leave you with a couple of factoids and pics from the yard before we all wilt under the summer sun. Heck, I may even get the downstairs painted this year. Right now it's covered with 3" of chick dust. Sadly, some of you will actually understand that comment and possibly wonder what's wrong with chick dust covered walls? Better than the walls where duck brooders sit I guess....
Happy Summer everybody.

Summer Solstice, 2013
  • The word summer originated from the Olde English word sumor which means "hottest season of the year".
  • On the summer solstice, the Sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky.
  • There are 16 hours and 2 minutes between sunrise and sunset – the longest day of the year.
  • The length of the day depends on your latitude -- If you happen to live in Barrow, Alaska, you will not have a sunset today. Since Barrow sits above the Arctic Circle, the sun just spins around the horizon. Actually, its worse than that. In Barrow, the sun rises on May 10th and doesn’t set there again until August 2nd. Something tells me their winters suck too.
  • While the June 21 solstice marks the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the start of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

Kelley Creek Farms is a small (micro really) hobby farm located in Central Alabama 30 minutes south of Birmingham. We raise heritage and rare waterfowl and poultry along with a myriad of other creatures that give the farm its life. In addition to the birds, we raise heirloom tomatoes and vegetables.

Each day is different and brings a new set of adventures. Some make you laugh and some make you cry. Some are just plain frustrating. But we persevere knowing that tomorrow's set of problems will be completely different than today. Still figuring all this out ....one day at a time and striving for a more sustainable way of life.
